Link Proposal
The whole process of finding an internship for this year’s LINK program was really a cool experience. It took me a little bit to find a field I was interested in, but when I did, I chose something along the IT world. A few days later, Key Jobson from Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory came into Animas, specifically looking for an intern in the IT and Data Analysis side of Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory. I immediately handed him a resume and told him I would love to come in for an interview. I was interviewed two days later, and then was officially offered the internship position the next day. The process of finding an internship was not very difficult for me, so that was very good.
My Internship Placement
As I said above, my internship is located at the Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory itself in Bodo Park. There, I will be in the business side, specifically IT and Data Analysis. This section of the business primarily helps with issues with software and evaluating store performance, as well as running promotions and sales. The role that this organization has in the community is really to attribute to the general happiness of society all over the world! I mean, who doesn't like chocolate? And my division of the company helps fix issues and design sales, so who doesn’t like cheap chocolate!?
My Mentor
My mentor for this internship is Key Jobson is the Chief Information Officer at Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory. He is the head over a lot of things, whether it is developing new software for the stores around the world, analyzing data and determining store performance, or even creating promotions for the stores to run that will help maximize profit. This person can offer me many opportunities after this internship as well. With his teaching, I can learn how to truly analyze data, show I am self sufficient and good at working on individual projects, and gain very valuable work experience in a good field. He also said that it is the company’s goal that interns come back for jobs if it is something that they are interested in. If I enjoy this internship, it would mean, that after I get more training, I have a potential good job to come to.
Goals
My career goal is ultimately to get a good, reliable job that can pay enough to make a living here in Durango. However, I do not want that job to become my whole life. I think that this type of job could be a good fit for me, if I want a desk job. To be honest, I have no idea if I would enjoy a desk job. However, even if I decide I hate this type of work, I still learned something. That would mean that I am one step farther in figuring out what it is I want to do, all by process of elimination. If I hate a desk job, I know to look elsewhere, and I am still one step farther than I was before. So ultimately, I have a very positive view of what the results of this internship could be. I am very excited about it.
Research I Need To Do
In order to succeed in this internship, I will need to give myself a little bit of a refresher on a few computer programs. The main program that I will need to refamiliarize myself with would be microsoft excel. This is because a lot of the data that I would be analyzing would be in this format. I would also need to be able to create charts that show the data that I came across. This should not be a very difficult thing for me to do however, because I am very savvy with these programs, and have had a lot of experience in the past using microsoft excel. This was primarily because my previous school was a very technological school, so we were all taught how to use programs very efficiently. As far as the rest of the internship goes, I am still waiting on a little bit more specific information from Key Jobson. He informed me that he would be keeping in touch about the project he has set aside for me. This way, I can have a little bit of time to think about how I will approach this project. I am very appreciative of that, but it is hard to know what else I will need to research until I have those details.
Process
In order to complete my project, there are a few things that will need to happen. First, it is an absolute certainty I will need to work on this project a little bit everyday after I leave the job site. I have a bad tendency to put things off, and this is something that will set me up for failure if I do not address it. I need to be keeping the journal everyday, instead of desperately trying to think back on what I did everyday to write down. To accomplish this, I think that I will need to work on the project a little bit everyday BEFORE I leave the office. By the time I get home, change and get comfortable, I know I am not going to be up to doing any work on the project itself. So, in my office, I just need to take a little bit of time and not be disturbed so that I can focus on getting my project done. This will also require that I do not work for hours and hours, and then have to do the project. That will add a lot of stress to my plate, and turn this experience from something good, to something I wish I had never done.
Reflection
Just setting up this internship has been a good experience for me. It shows how hard it really is to get a job with the economy the way it is lately. There are people everywhere looking for jobs, and so it is really hard to get the attention of potential employers. It did teach me very good interviewing skills that will benefit me all my life. The most of these is coming across as confident, hard working, and willing to do whatever it is that your employer needs. It did not take me too long to find my internship, but that was only because the mentor basically came straight to me. He came to the school, and asked for an intern, and it just so happened that it was in a field I was considering. So, I came in prepared with a resume, and made a good first impression. Not only that, I kept in contact with him so that he could not overlook me. Because of my persistence and good first impression, I got the interview. I came into the interview very professionally, and was very honest with my abilities and skills. I was offered the internship position the next day. This was encouraging, because it really showed that I do interview well.
So, ultimately, I am very excited about this internship. It is a very good opportunity to learn about a specific trade, and better yet, more about myself as a person and a worker. It can teach me what things I can enjoy, or maybe even not enjoy. It gives me a potential employment opportunity in the future, and really teaches me the mentality of working in this type of field. This internship is a very good thing for me, in all of those ways, as well as just getting used to the idea and feel of having a full time job. This will show me what adult life really is, and what it is like to try and make a living in a town like Durango, where jobs are scarce, salaries are low, and prices are high. So, I guess the main lesson I can learn from this opportunity is that I am getting a taste of how adult life is. This is a great thing, because it really shows me how things will be, and gives me an chance to really get myself prepared for the future that is steadily coming at me faster and faster.
